 President's Message

Fellow Rotarians,
November is Rotary Foundation Month, and the mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.

The Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world.

Contributions to the Annual Programs Fund through the Every Rotarian, Every Year (EREY) initiative are the primary source of funding for Foundation programs, which cover more than 160 countries and geographical areas on seven continents. From digging water wells for villages in Africa to teaching basic literacy skills to children in Latin America, during any given moment, thousands of Rotarians volunteer their time and expertise. All contributions to the Annual Programs Fund are spent wisely on quality Rotary projects.

Anyone who contributes $100.00 or more per year to the Annual Programs Fund is automatically recognized as a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member. Sustaining Members are critical to the Foundation. If every club member contributed $100 every year, Rotary could nearly double its efforts to help needy people worldwide and support the continued growth of its programs.

I ask that you consider making this year’s tax deductable donation before November 30th to help celebrate Rotary Foundation Month. Remember all donations can be made online at www.rotary.org.

A $100.00 donation to The Rotary Foundation can help provide textbooks for one elementary school in Zambia, purchase 1,000 trees to help reforest desolate regions of Guatemala, provide a hearing aid for a deaf child in Pakistan, buy de-worming tablets for 112 children in the Philippines, pay for cataract operations for three blind people in India, or provide 230 blankets for the elderly in the winter months of Korea.

You can commit today to donating and help make a difference in people’s lives.

The dictionary states that a foundation is the “basis or groundwork of anything” and I truly believe that our clubs foundation is stronger than ever and will continue to grow not only morally but also monetarily to help future generations through the generosity of our members.

Yours in Rotary Service,
Shawn

Students of the Month

Becca           Matt
November students Rebecca Lamb and Matt Rasanow joined the club for lunch and fellowship.

Becca, as she's known to her friends and family, is a cross country track star. Indeed, she set the school record. She was also on the bowling team for three years and participated in the choir all four years. On the volunteer front, she served as camp counselor for vacation bible school.

Matt is also a track and field star earning his varsity letters and exhibiting a healthy competitive streak with fellow student of the month Becca. Matt also is part of the Academic Aces. The Aces will appear on Academic Challenge. Matt brings a strong academic standing to the table -- he is part of the Spanish Club, National Honor Society and has earned high honors all four years of high school.

Chapter News

As Shawn has mentioned at the past couple of meetings, our Interactors (aka High School Rotary Club) will be traveling to MedWish International on Saturday Dec. 5  from 1:30 - 3:30pm to help with the sorting of medical supplies and I'd like to invite as many "big" Rotarians to join us as possible.

As you may recall, MedWish International is one of the groups that was instrumental in helping us stuff our Nicaraguan ambulance full of non-perishable medical supplies.  What a great way for us to help out and say thank you.

Please call (440-554-1417) or email me (adams@maximumvp.com) to let me know if you are interested in participating.  I'd like to put together a car pool of folks to go on that Saturday.  Thanks!

-Adam

Giving Thanks

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.  ~John Fitzgerald Kennedy

For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food, for love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds.  ~Theodore Roosevelt

Forever on Thanksgiving Day
The heart will find the pathway home.

Grace isn't a little prayer you chant before receiving a meal.  It's a way to live.  ~Attributed to Jacqueline Winspear

We give thanks for unknown blessings already on their way.  ~Author Unknown

To speak gratitude is courteous and pleasant, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live gratitude is to touch Heaven.  ~Johannes A. Gaertner

Batavia Rotary nets $66,000 in raffle event

Batavia, N.Y.  Rotary Club netted $66,000 in profits from its seventh annual Corvette raffle, the organization reported this week.

Several years ago the Batavia Rotary Club made a sizeable pledge to United Memorial Medical Center. The pledge was significant and required Rotarians to establish a fundraiser the local community would embrace and support; the vehicle and cash raffle was conceived.
