President's Message

My Fellow Rotarians:

Four years ago I joined Rotary to expand my circle of friends with a good sprinkling of businessmen, auditors, lawyers, builders, doctors, bankers, etc. In my first couple of years in Rotary, I found that along with the growing fellowship Rotary also served a huge purpose in our community and communities abroad. I quickly learned Rotarians are caring individuals, showing more warmth than I could of ever imagined. Our projects are executed through love & compassion and not just through systems & processes, checks & balances. The whole system always runs beautifully, with no role power for the various positions.

I also learned that Rotary gives as much as you take and takes as much as you give. What an organization to belong to!

I look forward to an exciting year as your club President. Everyone tells me it's going to go by fast, so let's dig in and get started now! We will be meeting in the next few weeks regarding our club calendar fundraiser. Please join us in kicking off this great project.

Together we will help change the world!

Let me close with a quote from John Kenny our Rotary International President:

“In Rotary everything we are and everything we aspire to become lies in the hands of Rotarian's in their clubs. If our clubs are congenial and our meeting well run, if our service is carefully planned and competently carried out, if our members are qualified, honest and respected in their vocations and communities then all of Rotary will thrive.”

This is why Rotary International President Kenny has declared this year’s theme as “The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands”. It truly is on our hands, let's run with it.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Shawn

Four Quick Questions With:

Doug Charboneau

1. If someone asked you why they should join Rotary, what would you tell them?
Fellowship, friendship, business contacts, opportunity to help the community.

2. What three items would you wish you had with you if you were stranded on a deserted island?
My Bible, my wife, and a satellite phone to call for rescue.

3. If you could trade professions with anyone in the North Ridgeville Rotary for one day, whose profession would you choose and why?

Bob Bunsey, because instead of a job he has a boat, a cottage, and loads of free time.

4. What is the last good book you read?
I just re-read Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.  This was a book I read when it first came out 20 years ago.  He recently wrote a sequel, so I re-read the original as a refresher before I read the sequel.

Craig Phillips

1. If someone asked you why they should join Rotary, what would you tell them?
The best part of Rotary is the service aspect of our club.  We have a very service oriented club and I am very proud of what we give back to the community.  I have made many great friendships through Rotary, and I am truly depressed when I’m not able to get to a Friday meeting.  I have fun at our meetings and it’s nice that people accept me the way I am.  I can be a little silly and unwind a bit at our meetings and events, yet I can still be there for a good cause and hopefully contribute.  Our club truly embraces the model “Service Above Self,” and our club has reached beyond the borders of North Ridgeville and across the world to lend a helping hand.

2. What three items would you wish you had with you if you were stranded on a deserted island?
I would take a picture of my family, a roll of aluminum foil, and coffee.  I couldn’t live without my coffee, and I need something metallic (hence the foil) for something to cook in and boil and purify water to make my coffee!  Hopefully my Boy Scout skills would allow me to be able to make a fire without matches, and the picture of my family would sustain me during my weeks, months, and years as a castaway!

3. If you could trade professions with anyone in the North Ridgeville Rotary for one day, whose profession would you choose and why?
I would trade places with any of our members who had served in the military.  One of the biggest regrets of my life is that I did not serve in the military, and I am so thankful to all of our veterans for their service to our country.  It has to be a proud feeling to have been a veteran and served our country.

4. What is the last good book you read?
The best book I ever read (and it was fairly recently) was the DaVinci Code by Dan Brown  I am currently reading The Curse of Rocky Colavito by Terry Pluto, and it has potential to be a great read.

Allen D. Retay

1. If someone asked you why they should join Rotary, what would you tell them?
To build and foster friendships and gain the opportunity to serve for the good of people.

2. What three items would you wish you had with you if you were stranded on a deserted island?
Water, food & sun block.

3. If you could trade professions with anyone in the North Ridgeville Rotary for one day, whose profession would you choose and why?
Kerry Mueller. I wouldn't have to work and could take the day off.

4. What is the last good book you read?
"The World is Flat" by Thomas Friedman.

Rotary: A Chance To Do Some Good

I joined a Rotary Club. I became a Rotarian.
These words were uttered at a regional gathering of Rotary Club representatives from all over Southern Arizona. They were said not as inspiration by a motivational speaker, but in a simple conversation between two gentlemen.

The statement didn't hit home right away. I had only been a member of the Cienega Rotary Club for less than a month when soon-to-be president Jeff Daniels asked me to join a few members at this meeting in Green Valley.
